Is teaching a competitive field?

I was really interested in the medical field but I'm not sure if it's right for me any more. Still wanting to work with people, I thought I would chose to be a teacher, but I was wondering if it's a competitive field or not? I think that was partially what drew me to the medical field. I want to be really good at what I do and I want people I work with to know it. (even if that sounds snobby) I guess I'm just drawn to the very successful women in tv shows and I want to be like them. Any incite will help! Thanks! :)
