Ruptured achilles tendon?

I have ruptured my achilles tendon on Friday and am in a plaster back-slab from my toes to my hip and go back to the hospital next week to see my consultant. I want to avoid an operation if possible for various reasons. if i choose to be treated just in a cast will the cast go all the way up my leg as this one does? its really not nice.
